Parent Teacher Conference Meat Market

Posted on November 9, 2007 - Filed Under Education, Fatherhood | 4 Comments

Went to parent/teacher conferences at Z’s school last night. There were parents, and there were teachers, but there wasn’t much in the way of conferences. When I attended the conferences at her elementary school we actually had an appointment and had x amount of time with the teacher. At her Middle School they basically herded all of the parents into the cafeteria (multi-purpose room) where they’d set up a bunch of tables (with VERY narrow aisles) and stationed a different…

Can You Determine the Prime Factor of A Positive Integer?

Progress reports came out last week, and now that Z’s in middle school she’s actually getting letter grades. WooHoo!! Something I can actually relate to! Alas, not all was to be celebrated. She ended up with a B in math. I had spoken to her math/science teacher, Ms. Falconer, about her frustrations with math and she’s been giving Z a little extra attention in that area, but she’s still struggling. So, once again, we’re looking into Math Tutors. It’s not…

Will Z Finally Get A College Fund?

As a result of the continuing cycle of poverty in my life, Z has a grand total of $0.00 set aside for her college fund. As a result, we’ve got about 6 years to come up with a “spare” $50,000-$100,000. I’m not comfortable accepting the strings (or blood) attached to government funding, so that leaves private scholarship opportunities. Enter corporate America….

This time, it’s Procter & Gamble with their $50,000 College Education Sweepstakes. Of course, there are strings attached here as…

Z’s Newest Sibling

I didn’t blog about my weekend with Z because it was unexpectedly cut short. Her mother went into labor Friday night and I took Z to the hospital late Saturday morning (after the Memory Walk and a brief stop for some new disc golf discs). Despite the doctor’s breaking X’s water around 10am, J managed to remain in his womb for another 12 or so hours.

So, weekend plans went down the drain, but Z and I had previously decided to…

Rain, Rain Go Away

Well, I didn’t get to see Z last weekend, and this weekend she had Girl Scouts on Friday and her first concert (w/ her mom) on Sunday, so that left us with just Saturday. I had plans for the whole day, starting with a full round of Disc Golf, then running around San Jose antiquing and just checking out some cool spots. But then it decided to rain. It hasn’t rained in months, but it had to rain on Saturday,…

The Fates ARE With Me!

No sooner do I blog about my loneliness when Z’s not sleeping over then the perfect opportunity/solution to the dilemma comes knocking on my computer monitor. Okay, it’s not the perfect solution, but it’s the next best thing!

Isn’t that absolutely adorable! It’s from a company called FotoBed that takes your original photograph and turns it into Photo Blankets, pillowcases, duvet covers, throw pillows, even shower curtains!
All I need to do is snap a shot of my little angel sleeping, have it…
