“Anarchism, really stands for the liberation of the human mind from the dominion of religion; the liberation of the human body from the dominion of property; liberation from the shackles and restraint of government.” »» Emma Goldman

My Daughter The Pro Blogger

Posted on August 18, 2008 - Filed Under Blogging, Fatherhood | Leave a Comment

As parents, there are millions of things we want to teach our children in a relatively short period of time.  As a divorced father who missed the first 9 years of his daughters life there are just as many things, but a much more compressed time frame.  Not only have I missed many, many years all together, but even the time I have is limited by visitation.  So it amazes me a bit that it took me so long  to…

I’m SOOOO Proud Of My Little Girl!

Posted on April 29, 2008 - Filed Under Fatherhood | 1 Comment

I guess I should say ‘young woman’ at this point, but she’ll always be my little girl. I don’t want to go into too many details because I know some of her friends like to keep up with everything here at Philaahzophy (you know who you are ;) ), but Z did something yesterday and today that made me proud beyond belief.

She showed real guts, poise and self-confidence yesterday in a way that so very, very few of her peer group would…

Why Do We Lie?

Posted on April 11, 2008 - Filed Under Fatherhood | 1 Comment

Z’s been on a serious lying kick of late. I don’t know how much of it’s just a puberty thing, but it’s really driving me crazy. In fact, we spent about 6 hours yesterday afternoon/evening discussing it (or me lecturing her about it depending on who you ask). She, of course, can’t come up with any coherent reason for all of the lies. Personally I find lying to be one the most distasteful acts a person can perpetrate on another.…

How Things Get Done, or… The Kids Finally Clean Their Room

Posted on January 10, 2008 - Filed Under Fatherhood | Leave a Comment

X called me this afternoon as she needed me to babysit for a few hours. This was just the opportunity I was looking for. Z and her 8-year old brother G have not cleaned their room in months and X keeps telling me she can’t figure out how to get them to do so. They’ve had entire days devoted exclusively to cleaning this room and not made an inch of headway. She claims to have tried everything. I think the problem is…

The Call I’ve Been Dreading Just Came In

Ring, Ring

Hello?

It’s Z

Hi Kitten. What’s up?

I’m just calling to let you know I won’t be coming over this weekend.

[sigh] Why not?

Because I’m going shopping with Mommy and A. Christmas shopping.

Okay…

Alright. Luv you.

Bye.

Sure Christmas vacation starts tomorrow afternoon, so there’s no school Friday. Sure I’ve got the legal right to see her for 3 1/2 days each week she’s not in school. Sure Saturday morning breakfast with Z is my favorite time each week, and she’s well aware that its the…

Cancelling The Christmas Trip

Posted on December 17, 2007 - Filed Under Fatherhood, Road Trippin', Travel | Leave a Comment

It took me six months to plan it, three months to pay for it and less than a week to cancel it entirely, losing about $650 in the process. Here was the itinerary:

  1. 12/26 - Early morning pickup of Z, heading up to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo for a day of wild rides and coaster fun followed by an evening of watching Z ooh and ahh over the Holiday in the Park decor and the World’s Largest Christmas Tree. The…
