Sorry for the late posting! I was busy making lemonade from life’s lemons…

What Is It?

Weekly WordPress Roundup is a hybrid between a blog carnival and a weblog. Every Monday morning the editor of that week’s roundup makes a single post linking to the “best” WordPress articles they’ve come across that week. The choices are made from their own web surfing and from articles submitted via the Roundup’s blogcarnival.com page. If you’re interested in hosting the Weekly WordPress Roundup, just drop an email to: philaahzophy@gmail.com

On To The Entries…

General WordPress News-

Our first entry comes from Jackie at Internet Marketing Strategy For Moms and even though it was posted last October, it’s still very relevant today. The title pretty much tells the story: WordPress.com Deleted All Of My Blogs. Apparetnly the folks at WordPress.com decided she was a splogger simply because she linked out to her other blogs. Not good news. And it’s not a problem that’s going away. It was a full year ago that I posted Isn’t Freedom Of Expression Worth $5 Per Month? right here at Philaahzophy.

Looking for work? Well, according to the WordPress Publisher Blog, oDesk Reports “WordPress” Fastest Growing In-Demand Skill in 2008! So it seems like your blogging skills can pay off in the “real world” as well.

WordPress Plugins-

Madeline Begun Kane submitted her brief article on the wonders of the WP-SpamFree plugin titled Life-Saving, Spam-Fighting WordPress Plugin. I didn’t investigate WP-SpamFree during my own recent search for a comment spam solution, because it’s listed as only being compatible up to WordPress 2.6.2. If you know that it’s been upgraded for (or is compatible with) 2.7 then I’d love to hear about it in the comments section below!

WordPress Tips-

As I’ve started exploring the limits of what can be done with WordPress I’ve found myself coming closer and closer to altering the core Wordpress files. Since any changes to the core will have to be redone manually whenever a new update comes out, this is a very bad thing. Luckily, the folx over at Cats Who Code have an elegant solution in their How To: Overwrite Core WordPress Functions.

Mike Mueller recently posted a great overview on Setting Up Your WP Blog at his Mike’s Minute Real Estate Blog.

WordPress Themes-

Ever wish you could use more widgets without your blog looking overcrowded? Well check out last week’s Thursday Themeday review of the Quadruple Blue four column WordPress theme! Considering many people (myself included much of the time) feel that three column themes are, by their very nature, cluttered, the concept of a four column theme may seem preposterous. But, somehow, this one pulls it off.

Anthony Delgado’s Free WordPress Themes may not be what you expect. Instead of listing more free themes he actually discusses how to make a theme “your own” with only minor modifications.

Want to use WordPress as a CMS? Then you absolutely have to check out the WordPress ReMix Theme I reviewed last week!

—–

That’s wraps up this week’s WordPress Roundup! Look for next week’s edition over at Gilroy Review on Monday, January 26th! Submit your WordPress-related article (or someone else’s that you find worthwhile!) to the next edition of Weekly WordPress Roundup using our carnival submission form or by emailing it to philaahzophy@gmail.com. Future hosts can be found on the Weekly WordPress Roundup homepage. If you’d like to be added to the list, just drop an email!

As always, comments, links and social bookmarks are very much appreciated!

They’re up to the same old tricks they were running last time around – having employees pose as independent bloggers, etc, but they still can’t seem to keep their servers online. If you don’t believe me or think I’m just bitter try reading the comments section of any of my past posts on Top Hosting Center. They simply can’t handle the load they have now, but are looking to sell more space on their already overloaded servers.

Oddly enough, my old nemesis “John Raul” never wrote about the new Rudolph plans. He’s the THC employee who was running all around the internet last year claiming to be a satisfied customer when he was, in fact, on the payroll. Top Hosting Center’s CEO, Eric Vanier, even replied to his various John’s various comments as if he was a customer while sending him a regular monthly paycheck. Those of you who have followed this story here at Philaahzophy will recall that John claimed I got him fired a few months back. Well, according to his latest blog posts not only is he still working for THC, but apparently he has fallen in love with Eric Vanier as well. Very strange indeed.

BTW, THC has finally stopped pretending to be the “#1 Budget Hosting” company and is, instead, touting their “Top 10 Fastest Growing” award from HostReview. Knowing how much Eric likes to make things up out of whole cloth I looked into it and it turns out that the “fastest growing” category is compiled completely by votes solicited by the web hosting companies themselves. HostReview still has not reviewed the company itself and does not endorse it in any way. Rather, this “award” is just a matter of Eric, John, and their cohorts gaming the system by repeatedly voting for themselves from various IP addresses. Not very impressive as far as awards go, but very sad indeed for a company that tries to project a profesional image.

As for the word “scam”, regular readers know I don’t use it lightly. But what else can you call a company that regularly advertises “Guaranteed 99.9% Uptime”, delivers around 85% uptime, and refuses to even acknowledge, much less grant, their users request for compensation?

If you’re just looking for a cheap place to host your own domain, then Top Hosting Center may serve your purposes. But if you want to know that your website’s going to be online whenever anyone wants to visit it, I’d consider any of the thousands of other web hosting options out there.

The good news is that the only websites I manage that dropped in PR were those dedicated to a now dead collectible miniature game, HorrorClix. Their dropping isn’t surprising as the pages that linked to them have all ceased to exist leaving them the sole sites of their kind on the internet. Of course, that also makes them the definitive sites in their niche, but Google doesn’t really care about relevance, they only care about backlinks and following their arbitrary rules.

The wacky part has to do with Zaira’s sites. Her personal blog, Butterfly Diaries, finally managed to score a PR after being around for two years and more than 100 posts. She’s got a shiny new PR of 1. However, a new site she just started a month ago has a grand total of 6 posts, one backlink (from a PR2 blog carnival), fewer than two dozen unique visitors in its lifetime, and a shiny new PageRank of 3! Say what? The site doesn’t even rank in the top 20 for its primary keywords but Google has decided that it’s more trustworthy than the only site linking to it and equally as trustworthy a site as John Chow’s. Well, at least my little girl has something to brag about

Our data is on the move more than ever and that means that private data is more at risk than ever. Between always on internet connections at home and the preponderance of laptops and portable devices that travel nearly everywhere we do, twenty-four hours per day keeping our data sevure is harder than ever. Luckily, as our needs for secure data has grown, so has PGP. Originally created to allow anti-nuclear activists communicate securely on BBSs (the computer Bulletin Board Systems that were used before the internet was developed) PGP file encryption software has grown up alongside data storage and transmission technology – always evolving to stay one step ahead of the latest threats to private data.

In 2002, PGP Corporation was formed to better meet the expanding encryption needs of businesses which rely more and more on technology. Meanwhile, personal PGP email encryption has remained as freeware. Now, PGP is offering a free 30 day trial on their full suite of encryption software, including email encryption and hard drive encryption for Mac and PC laptops and desktops. This data protection suite includes: PGP Whole Disk Encryption, PGP Desktop Email, PGP NetShare (Windows Only), PGP Zip, PGP Virtual Disk, PGP Shredder, IM encryption, and more.

At the end of the 30 day trial your PGP protection will degrade gracefuly to the current freeware version, losing complete hard drive encryption and several other “pro” features, but still allowing users to access all of the files they may have previously encrypted with PGP. Still, if your business is not currently encrypting it’s data this is a wonderful opportunity to see just how simple high end data protection can be.

It’s been about seven years now that I’ve been using BitTorrent to download large files from the internet. In that time I’ve seen dozens of trackers come and go. Many due to staffing or technical problems, some due to government interference of various types. I was even a member of a couple of “private” trackers that turned out to be run by the FBI the whole time. Thanks for all the great free movies and programs, Uncle Sam!

However, (until last week) it had been more than three months since I made any illegal downloads. My BitTorrent client (Azureus/Vuze) had been delegated to the useful, but fully legal, status of helping spreadthe message of freedom by seeding the monthly archives of Free Talk Live. It wasn’t the FBI or fear of prosecution that spared the media moguls the (supposedly) millions of dollars in losses that I and my fellow pirates supposedly inflicted upon them. Nor was it some form of guilty conscience or newfound moral belief. No, it was matter of convenience.

You see, it was about four months ago that the television in my room died of old age. At the time I was broke, so couldn’t replace it. A friend then told me about the Netflix “Watch Instantly” program that offers hundreds of movies and television shows for immediate download (in addition to their great thru-the-mail DVD rental). Within hours I was hooked and had a queue of several hundred “discs” in my queue for instant watching. Finally, the market had come up with a solution to sate my media hunger!

Sure, via Netflix I wasn’t seeing the movies currently in theaters, but any that actually had me excited I was paying to go see rather than downloading anyway. I downloaded video so I’d have something to watch, not to watch a particular show. Television had, largely, filled that need, but with the minimum cost of a cable or satellite package approaching $100/month and the ease of free downloads the math kept me online. Of course, if the cable and satellite companies had been free to offer true a la carte programming, instead of being locked into the obscenely bloated packages the government required them to offer things may have been different. But as anyone who pays attention knows, America hasn’t been a free market for a very, very long time.

Netflix gave me exactly what I wanted – a broad selection of entertainment, ready when ever I wanted to consume it, at a reasonable price (less than $10/month). Once I got hooked into Netflix it took me almost six weeks to even realize that I was no longer pirating media. There was simply no longer a need. This ‘new’ system was easier and more convenient. The fact that it was ‘legal’ and actually helped support the creators of the entertainment that I valued were mere icing on the cake. The search for profit led the market to fulfill my needs without my even having to ask. That is the true beauty of freedom.

Oh, for those of wondering why I want back to my ‘evil’ ways in the last week, it’s because my bank screwed up my debit card a few days before Netflix tried to charge my monthly fee. So my account’s suspended while things get worked out with the beauracy. Meanwhile I’m cringing for the variety that Netflix offers and making due with sub-par pirated releases.

One would think that as the internet grows it would be easier to find a quality web hosting company. However, that has not been my experience. Although I haven’t been writing about it lately, Top Hosting Center still can’t manage to keep my websites online. This is despite their moving me to another server with a smaller load and me moving my sites that require the most services to another webhost. Over the last six weeks or so they’ve only managed about a 92% uptime, but they continue to ignore my requests that they honor their 99.9% uptime guarantee.

Meanwhile I’m paying roughly $50 per month to WiredTree.com for a Virtual private Server. Their customer service is definitely top-notch, though so I’m not too frustrated at the cost for now. It’s been a pretty steep learning curve, but I think I’m doing okay. Still can’t figure out why I’m using so much RAM, but I’ve been told that memory is the single largest limiting factor in a VPS environment. Weird that it was never a problem when paying so much less for shared hosting.

As I’ve searched for a better understanding of what, exactly, I need in a web host I’ve been reading a lot of articles over at Web Hosting Geeks (who I’ve written about before). They’re primarily a website hosting review site, though they also have a large article directory and numerous links to resources elsewhere on the web. I’ve been spending most of my time poring over the various customer reviews, though. Not only do I find myself better understanding the world of web hosting in th emodern age, but it also keeps me from feeling like I’m all alone or have some bizarre requirements.

(n) factoid (something resembling a fact; unverified (often invented) information that is given credibility because it appeared in print)

Now for some ‘actual’ factoids-

Rape has nothing to do with sex. Rape is all about power.

Pornography leads to rape.

I know y’all have heard both of these factoids repeatedly. The vast majority of you, no doubt, believe at least one of them to be true, and have likely uttered them yourselves. Have you ever stopped to question where these concepts came from? What research backs them up? I have. For years.

However, it was only recently (as my daughter progresses into puberty) that I went looking for that evidence in order to better prepare her for a safe passage through life. After all, as a father I want to do everything possible to protect my daughter from such a horrible experience. But, as an anarchist I know that the government is ill-equipped to help me reach that goal. A better understanding of the causes behind this most heinous of crimes is necessary, after all, to finding ways to prevent (or at least) reduce its occurrence.

I found a lot of websites, books and articles that asserted both of the factoids above, though none had much in the way of evidence. I also found numerous sources on both sides of the ‘pornography leads to rape’ argument. But neither side had much weight behind them either.

Then I found Pornography, Rape, and the Internet (PDF) by Todd D. Kendall, Assistant Professor of Economics at Clemson University. Professor Kendall contrasted the rise of the internet between 1993 and 2008with reported crime statistics during the same time frame. His results-

I find that internet access appears to be a substitute for rape; in particular, the results suggest that a 10 percentage point increase in internet access is associated with a decline in reported rape victimization of around 7.3%. Given the limitations in my measure of pornography consumption, plus the usual concerns regarding omitted variables, functional form assumptions, and other confounding factors, such results by themselves may be unconvincing. Thus, I support this claim by showing that the internet has no apparent substitution effect on any of 25 other measured crimes, with the exception of the only other well-defined sex crime, prostitution. Moreover, I show that the effect on rape is concentrated among states with the highest male-to-female ratios, and that by age, the effect on rape is concentrated among teenage men, who are the prime consumers of pornography, and for whom the internet induced the largest change in availability. Considered as a whole, these results present a more compelling empirical case.

I’m not an economist, a sociologist, or an anthropologist. And I’ve never taken a statistics class. But I did read through the 40-plus page paper linked to above and it seems to hold water. So, if rape is (at least sometimes) about sex, and pornography can lead to a lessening of violent sexual acts, then where does that leave us as a society? And why is the government ignoring the reality of the situation and pushing things in the opposite direction? Maybe because they don’t want society at large to learn that the reduction in sex crimes has more to do with the ready availability of cheap (or free) pornography than with ever-increasing police budgets and power. Further evidence that the powers that be care more about maintaining their power than the good of the common man (or woman).

Hello again Did you miss me?

If any of y’all have wondered where I’ve been, I’ve been around, just keeping my paws off the site in order to see what would happen. Specifically, I was curious how my complete absence for a month would effect such things as my standings in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) and my Google Adsense revenue. Results were both positive and a bit distressing, but I’ll get to my reaction to them in a few moments.

Traffic Results and SERPs-

First, here’s some actual numbers from Clicky Web Analytics-

September Traffic Stats for Philaahzophy.com-

October Traffic Stats for Philaahzophy.com-

To quickly sum up those traffic numbers I had more visitors looking at more pages, but spending less time overall in October as compared to September. And that’s without really promoting the site or doing so much as visiting, much less adding new content. Yes, my last post was actually on October 5th, but that post only received 215 views leaving more than 2,500 new views unaccounted for. And, though it’s not visible in those screenshots I also lost more than 1,500 ’social media’ views by not actively promoting the site through StumbleUpon. So, where’d that traffic come from? Well, search traffic more than tripled in October from 2,140 to 6,627!

Google Adsense Revenue-

Unfortunately, Google won’t let me share my Adsense earnings with you, but I do believe I can safely say the following: In the almost three years I’ve been a member of Google Adsense I’ve earned a grand total of three payments. I first reached payment threshold in February of this year (about 18 months into my history with the program), my second in August (six months later), and my third at the end of October. In other words, my revenue has consistently increased as I’ve learned more about how the system works and regardless of my continuing to add new content to this site.

I did manage to earn roughly 15% more from Google Adsense in September than I did in October, but I attribute that more to the Adsense earnings from StumbleUpon visitors that I wrote about previously. And, even without any new content, October was still my second best month for Google Adsense earnings by more than 25%.

Conclusions-

So what does this all mean? Unfortunately, I have no idea. Thus the ‘positive but distressing’ comment in my opening paragraph. The results are clearly positive – traffic and revenue are both up – but they’re also distressing because this seems to be happening not only outside my control, but apparently also without my input. It just seems to be an organic occurrence now that I’ve reached some sort of critical mass with this blog.

Yes, it does seem there was a Google PageRank update in October, but Philaahzophy still sits at it’s arbitrarily enforced zero because I dare to state my opinions. This despite the fact Philaahzophy has more backlinks and far more traffic than my PR 2 blog. So, that couldn’t be the cause of all of this.

I do have numerous pages on the first page of search engine results (in Google, Yahoo! and MSN search), but few, if any, of these just achieved those high results. And even if my standing has increased in the SERPs, that simply begs the question of why since I’ve been doing nothing to the site.

The number of new links back to Philaahzophy decreased dramatically in October because I was neither out promoting the site nor generating new content to link to. So that wasn’t it either.

If forced to state a reason behind these increases I’m left with only two options: 1) More people are spending more time searching the internet for topics I’ve written about over the last two years, or 2) Philaahzophy has reached some sort of critical mass. I’m sorry if that informational isn’t exactly helpful, but one can’t always predict the usefulness of an experiment upon initiating it.

For those who actually missed my ramblings: thank you. I do have several posts waiting in the wings that should be appearing shortly.

We’re a little light on submissions this week, but that just means we’ve got room to grow! Each week we will feature the best blog posts written by members of the Forum Finder community.

What’s ForumFinder, you ask? Well, Breezie has those answers for you in The ForumFinder Forums, which covers “A little bit of the history behind ForumFinder”, posted at Just shooting the breeze with Breezie.

The short version? It’s a place where netizens try to help each other out. For example, Izea Bloggers at My Thoughts, Ideas, and Ramblings wants to know what you think about Public vs Private School. This blog post has been on fire all week with people from every walk of life weighing with opinions one way or the other. It’s one of those great experiences when the comments are as entertaining and informative as the original post itself.

We’re not “all serious all the time” over at ForumFinder though, as Christina thecoffeelady of CoffeeCoffeeCoffee (notice a theme there?) makes clear in her recent post It happened again!
