Question For The Educators and Homeschoolers

Posted on December 12, 2007 - Filed Under Education, Fatherhood | Leave a Comment

A quick welcome to all the educators and homeschoolers who are visiting today thanks to the inclusion of my Parent Teacher Conference Meat Market post being included in the Carnival of Education! If you’ve got a second I’ve got some some questions for y’all.

I’ve begun seriously considering homeschooling my 11 year old daughter, Z. She’s been in public school since kindergarten and I simply can’t afford private school as much as I wish that I could. I do, however, work from…

Proud Father Of A Science Geek

I believe I may have failed to mention it here on the Philaahzophy, but at the beginning of the school year, Z joined an after school club/activity called the Mathematics Science Engineering Achievement (MESA) Program. Basically, it’s science club with year-long projects and a science fair type of even in May. In other words, Z’s becoming a science geek, of sorts. Being a big fan of science geeks (when pushed for a hero, I usually come up with Albert Einstein)…

Drug War Insanity Comes To Morgan Hill

For those who are unaware, I live in a small town called Morgan Hill, CA. We’re what Realtors call a “bedroom community nestled between San Jose’s Silicon Valley and Gilroy’s Agricultural Marvel”. With a population of about 33,500 (1/3 of that being minors) it’s a pretty mellow place to live. With the 10th largest city in the US a mere 20 miles away, it’s also far from a complete hick town or real country living. So I knew it was…

University Doesn’t Mean What It Use To

When I was a kid, going to college meant 4 years living in dorms. These days there are a myriad of ways to get a degree without having to dedicate most of your waking hours to it for four years at a time. While trying to explain this to Z I came across capella university. It’s an accredited university that offers 100% online classes and grants Bachelor’s degrees in business, information technology, and public safety. They also offer post-graduate degrees…

Is It Time To Return To School?

Posted on September 17, 2007 - Filed Under Aahz, Education | Leave a Comment

Speaking of non-traditional education….

I always excelled in school, scored exceptionally on my SATs, got accepted to all four of the top American universities I applied to, and won a full scholarship (including living expenses) from the United States Navy. Unfortunately, I was so convinced at the beginning of my senior year of high school that my life would be spent in the military I didn’t apply for any other scholarships. By the time the school year had concluded I’d come…

Students Need Credit Advice Most Of All

Posted on September 14, 2007 - Filed Under Personal Finance | Leave a Comment

Kids obviously go to college for an education, but what they can learn in the classroom is only a small portion of the education available while they’re there. Life lessons are the key to a beneficial college experience and one of the most important life lessons one can learn is how to handle credit. While campuses are flooded with special credit card offers for students, they don’t provide any actual educational benefit (other than which card is better looking, perhaps).

For…
