How The Market Can Enforce Intellectual Property

Part of the Applied Anarchy 2008 Series - Previous in series
Although I was aware of Napster, Kazaa, LimeWire and other second-generation file sharing systems I was never much of a fan. It’s not that I had a problem “giving back” to the “community”, but rather I really didn’t like the security holes that ran rampant with them all. The idea of opening my computer to anyone with a modicum of knowledge just didn’t sit right with me. …

Charter Covers Your Back To School Basics
Posted on August 28, 2008 - Filed Under Contests, Technology | Leave a Comment
Ask a hundred different kids what they consider essential for life and you will surely get plenty of different answers. But I’d be willing to wager that you’d also see four things crop up time and again: television, telephone, a laptop computer, and high speed internet access. Oh yeah! And gas money if they’re old enough to drive. If they’re not, then you could probably use that gas money to cover the cost driving them around.
Well, if you’re shopping for…

Windows Vista Equals Pain Free Computing
Posted on July 10, 2008 - Filed Under Technology | 5 Comments
As mentioned earlier this afternoon I spent most of the evening installing Windows Vista and playing around with the new operating system. Having read and heard all of the compatibility horror stories when Vista was first introduced last year I must admit I’ve been avoiding the upgrade. But I keep a fair amount of private client data on my home system and my boss was getting more and more insistent that I upgrade for the added security features. Besides, my older…

Cost Captain Comes Through With Academic Discounts
Posted on July 10, 2008 - Filed Under Shopping, Technology | Leave a Comment
Well, I finally broke down and purchased Microsoft Office 2007 and Vista. I purchased them through Cost Captain using the Home School discount, so got them both for slightly more than $200. Not too bad, especially as the bulk of the purchase was paid for by a CostCaptain.com gift certificate that I’d received last Christmas and just not got around to using until now.
I’ve written about Cost Captain a few times before here on Philaahzophy, but having received my package today,…

The Grand Wiki Experiment
Posted on January 5, 2008 - Filed Under Technology | 1 Comment
It’s no secret that I am very much not a fan of Wikipedia. This has surprised many of my associates who know that I’m an anarchist, but don’t yet truly understand what the term means. They believe that, because I’m an anarchist, and the strongest of free speech proponents (for example, I refuse to have any moderators on the forums that I run, trusting the community to police itself) I should therefore be passionate about the free-wheeling openness of Wikis. The reality…

Who Knew I Could SAVE Money By Homeschooling?
Posted on December 21, 2007 - Filed Under Education, Technology | 2 Comments
As I get further and further along the path to homeschooling Z I’ve been researching different areas. The latest has been the actual cost of schooling her myself (considering I’ll still be paying taxes to the useless public schools). It turns out that, thanks to www.CostCaptain.com I can actually save money on a bunch of computer software when I start home schooling her. For example, the Standard Edition of Microsoft Office 2007 usually costs around $210, with the (limited) student edition…
