The Long Lost California’s Great America Videos

Posted on April 27, 2008 - Filed Under Fatherhood | 1 Comment

Okay, so “long lost” is a bit of a stretch. The truth is I get so upset thinking about the nightmarish opening day at California’s Great America in March that I keep forgetting to upload these videos to Philaahzophy. They have, however, been on YouTube since Mid-March and received a couple of hundred views. So, somebody thinks they’re entertaining.

These were both taken during the karaoke event where X and her kids (Z and her two half-brothers) opened the show with Bon…

California’s Great America Has Not-So-Great Opening

Posted on April 11, 2008 - Filed Under Ride Reports | 3 Comments

As a roller coaster junkie I was really looking forward to opening day of California’s Great America. Although not a new park (Great America has been in Santa Clara for more than 30 years now) March 16th was the first public operation day under the new name and under Cedar Fair’s watch. I’ve only been to one Cedar Fair park in the past (Cedar Point back in the 80s), but their reputation in the roller coaster community is huge. So…

Part of the Friday Frugality Series - Previous in series         Next in series

Last month I worte an article titled Maximizing Savings By Playing The Gift Card Market which has proven to be one of my most popular. Consider this a Friday Frugality Follow-up (man, I just loves me some alliteration ;) ).

According to a report from my local CBS affiliate, KPIX channel 5-

Since January 1st California merchants have to give you cash back for anything under $10 if you ask…

Storm Madness In Gilroy and Morgan Hill

I just went to pick up Z because her Mom won’t drive in this weather (I don’t blame her, but Rover was built for this kind of weather). On the way down I passed bunches of branches, trash cans, etc in the middle of the street, but the worst was a guy whose car was stuck in the middle of the road. He’s certainly going to need a new Mustang Radiator because a three foot section of branch was sticking out…

World’s Largest Christmas Tree, or… Robbed On The Midway!

Posted on December 31, 2007 - Filed Under Carnival Midway Games, Ride Reports | Leave a Comment

Part of the Carnival Midway Games Series - Previous in series         Next in series

Despite the Christmas trip being cancelled, Z and I headed up to Vallejo and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday. The trip was canceled because I was no longer going to support her spoiled nature. The DK trip was permissible because she paid her own way. The primary motivation for the trip (other than riding Medusa) was “The Biggest Christmas Tree In The World”. And let…

Happy Birthday Comrade Kropotkin!

Part of the Applied Anarchy Series - Previous in series

Okay, so it’s kind of late for this, but it’s still 12/21 here in California and I’ve had a crazy kind of day. It’s amazing I’ve got any work done at all. If anarchists were immortal, Peter Alekseevich Kropotkin would be 165 years old today. I’ve always been open with y’all that I haven’t read much of the historical work on anarchy, but Kropotkin I’m somewhat familiar with.…
