According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics three of the fastest growing occupations in America are network systems and data communications analysts, computer software engineers, and computer systems analysts, all of which generally require a bachelor’s degree (at least). Living in Silicon Valley I know dozens of folx with these skills and these degrees who are getting burned out on their jobs, but feel trapped due to the expertise and connections they’ve developed over the years. Well, capella university may…

A quick welcome to all the educators and homeschoolers who are visiting today thanks to the inclusion of my Parent Teacher Conference Meat Market post being included in the Carnival of Education! If you’ve got a second I’ve got some some questions for y’all.

I’ve begun seriously considering homeschooling my 11 year old daughter, Z. She’s been in public school since kindergarten and I simply can’t afford private school as much as I wish that I could. I do, however, work from…

Parent Teacher Conference Meat Market

Went to parent/teacher conferences at Z’s school last night. There were parents, and there were teachers, but there wasn’t much in the way of conferences. When I attended the conferences at her elementary school we actually had an appointment and had x amount of time with the teacher. At her Middle School they basically herded all of the parents into the cafeteria (multi-purpose room) where they’d set up a bunch of tables (with VERY narrow aisles) and stationed a different…

When I was a kid, going to college meant 4 years living in dorms. These days there are a myriad of ways to get a degree without having to dedicate most of your waking hours to it for four years at a time. While trying to explain this to Z I came across capella university. It’s an accredited university that offers 100% online classes and grants Bachelor’s degrees in business, information technology, and public safety. They also offer post-graduate degrees…

Can You Determine the Prime Factor of A Positive Integer?

Posted on October 9, 2007 - Filed Under Education, Fatherhood | Leave a Comment

Progress reports came out last week, and now that Z’s in middle school she’s actually getting letter grades. WooHoo!! Something I can actually relate to! Alas, not all was to be celebrated. She ended up with a B in math. I had spoken to her math/science teacher, Ms. Falconer, about her frustrations with math and she’s been giving Z a little extra attention in that area, but she’s still struggling. So, once again, we’re looking into Math Tutors. It’s not…
