Yes, the Santa Clara County Courts released a killer a few days back and he’s now walking the streets of Gilroy once again - and I couldn’t be happier about it! From the Gilroy Dispatch-
Stephen Lake was sentenced to an unusually high 400 hours of community service, three years of probation and $2,110 in court and restitution costs at the San Martin Courthouse Friday afternoon for hitting and killing local bird-enthusiast Norm Watenpaugh Oct. 15, 2006. The 29-year-old Lake -…

Another Example of Marketplace Innovation

You never know where you’re going to find examples of how the market self-regulates to create its own efficiency without (or more accurately despite) government controls. For example, A new blog on Micro-ISVs and start-ups by entrepreneur Harry Schechter deals primarily with Independent Software vendors. However, I just came across a great post that he wrote back in September explaining the real reason for all the generic “store brand” products sitting on drug store shelves.
It seems SchechterTech was looking for a new…
Drug War Insanity Comes To Morgan Hill

For those who are unaware, I live in a small town called Morgan Hill, CA. We’re what Realtors call a “bedroom community nestled between San Jose’s Silicon Valley and Gilroy’s Agricultural Marvel”. With a population of about 33,500 (1/3 of that being minors) it’s a pretty mellow place to live. With the 10th largest city in the US a mere 20 miles away, it’s also far from a complete hick town or real country living. So I knew it was…
Why I Trust No One With My Money Or My Secerets

I’ve been on the fringes of the phreaker, hacker and pirate communities since the early 1980s and have seen a lot of people and organizations come and go over the years. I’ve also seen a lot of people’s lives destroyed when the government thugs came kicking in their doors, absconding with all of their equipment and even locking them away in cages for years on end. As a result, I’ve been aware of Hushmail since 1999 and am saddened, but…

Yesterday while having a birthday lunch with Z and her friend K the topic of government came up somehow and brilliant 10 year old K just jumped in with “I hate the government since I read that Oklahoma book Z recommended”. She was referring to The Oklahoma City Bombing (Terrorist Attacks) by Geraldine Giordano which Z discovered in their school library in September. After sharing a few…
