I’ve always been in love with the road. There’s simply nothing like cruising down a dark deserted highway not knowing where you are or where you’re going and not really caring either. I’ve been trying to instill this love of freedom in my daughter, Z, as well. Read these posts to see how it’s going…

Rover Passed His Test - Now For His Reward

As I’ve mentioned, Rover (my beloved 1989 Ford Bronco) passed his smog check today. Given his age, the fact I’m not remotely a mechanic, and that he’s classified by the DMV as having a “High Emitter Profile” I seriously had my doubts. Z, on the other hand, had complete faith. Now that we know Rover won’t be stolen away by the government for the next two years we need to decide on his reward. Since Z is responsible for customization…

Keep Your Windshield Clear On Cold Mornings

Living the bulk of my life in California (and traditionally being a late sleeper) I’ve only rarely walked out to my car on a cold morning only to discover the windshield so covered with frost that I couldn’t see out of it. However, while chatting with a native New Hampshirite the other day he passed on a tip to avoid this problem even on the coldest of mornings…

It was news to me, but did you know that vinegar melts ice? Just…

Another Day At The Races

After getting absolutely soaked at Fisherman’s Wharf on Saturday, Z and I found a Motel 6 in Oakland that was only $70 with a friendly staff and a great room. They pointed us to a breakfast spot called Nikko’s that seriously rocked as well. Then it was off to the races…

A couple of weeks back I took Z to the racetrack for her very first time. While we were there we learned that on Super Bowl Sunday they would be having 8 drawings…

Rainy Evening At Fisherman’s Wharf

Saturday afternoon Z had a memorial service to attend, so our weekend got a late start. Without any real plan, we headed north on 280 and cut over to PCH (Highway 1) via Highway 92. The section of PCH between Half Moon Bay and San Francisco has now been checked off Z’s list of highways traveled. Unfortunately we didn’t really stop at any of the nifty sites along the way as Z still hasn’t learned to speak up and ask…

Small Souvenirs - Big Obsession

Posted on January 30, 2008 - Filed Under Road Trippin' | 1 Comment

When I got married some 13 years ago we were beyond broke. The wedding had to be in Las Vegas because the bride’s family was unwilling to travel to the Bay Area, but at least they got us our hotel stay for free. Still, we were unable to afford much in the way of souvenirs or luxuries while were there. That was, until I saw a penny press in the lobby of the Excalibur. You know the ones - you put…

Finally Got Those Storm Pics Posted

On the way back from picking up Z I drove down a street that I had been down a mere 15 minutes earlier. I chose that street because it was flooded and driving through floodwaters in a 4×4 is fun. Well, it was no longer flooded, but there was a giant tree felled across it. We estimate the trunk of the tree to be 3′-4′ in diameter. The trunk was a good 10 feet in from the curb and the”top”…
