Last month I shared a story about a company that was going to plant a tree for every person who signed up for their free service. I applauded this company for doing something the government regularly fails to do: protect the environment while simultaneously serving their customers and their profit margin. But they aren’t the only company out there that cares about the future of our planet.
For the last six years, Fiskars has awarded a Project Orange Thumb grant to deserving community groups around the United States and Canada in order to assist them in projects geared toward community involvement, neighborhood beautification, sustainable agriculture and/or horticultural education. Last year, they provided over 100 community groups with over $300,000 to create and develop their own special community gardens and this year they’ll be granting another 24 Project Orange Thumb grants totalling more than $50,000.
If your group is interested in applying for one of these community gardening grants (applications from individuals will not be accepted), just swing by their website to get all of the details and start your application process. Filing deadline for applications is February 17, 2009. Just think what your school, gardeinng club, or community group could do with up to $1,500 in Fiskars garden tools and up to $800.00 in gardening-related materials! And all without having to participate in the corrupt government funding system.
