Just when I thought I’d seen the final word in new social networking sites I came across Acobay, a self described consumer network which aims to connect you with people that like (or at least buy) the same stuff that you like. We’re not talking about people that share your hobbies, politics or personal philosophy here. No we’re talking about the stuff you buy: cars, cameras, cell phones, computers, even watches, golf clubs and chain saws!
Sure you can also connect over the stuff that you consume: identifying your favorite books, magazines, movies, music, restaurants, hotels and vacation destinations. But the focus seems to be on the material consumer goods that you own (or plan on owning). In fact, in addition to adding information about what you already own, you can also make a “wish list” of things that you hope to own in the future.
Once you’ve cataloged your possessions you’ll find yourself in a network of people that own the same stuff you do. So you can start conversations with other members who use the Perfect PushUp by BodyRev, for example. Unlike other social networking site where you write on your own personal page and friends visit to read and comment, on Acobay all conversation relates around the stuff itself. You can write about the stuff you own on its page, reply to other people’s comments about the stuff you own, or even ask questions related to the stuff you own.
Isn’t it ironic that I first heard about Acobay on Christmas Day? ![]()
