Trucknapped? Bronconapped? Whatever! He’s being held for ransom by an unscrupulous mechanic named Mike at Bill’s Custom Transmission here in Morgan Hill. You can read the whole sordid story over on my Morgan Hill blog, but the short version is that the guy’s had my Bronco for almost a week, I know nothing more about the transmission problems it is having, and he wants me to pay $525 for an inspection that he openly admits was never done!
Since the government enforces a monopoly on protection I had no choice but to call the police – who told me it was a civil matter and there was nothing they could do, but the mechanic was free to sue me in small claims court if he wanted to. Gee, way to protect and serve, there officer. This is one of those days where I really wish we had a free market in protection services. Any company who had to actually answer to its customer’s would have helped me get the car out of the sho pwith a smile on their face. Instead, my money is stolen to support people who have zero obligation to protect me or my property.
