Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that you're generally better off sticking with what you know. And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones you don't make. »» Donald Trump

The first thing you should do when realizing that you need a new widget or doodad is head to the internet and do some research.  Once you’ve decided exactly which gizmo you’re going to buy the only sane next step is to look around for a coupon code.

I’ve long been an advocate of shopping online to save both time and money, but as the economy continues to stagnate and inflation rules the day, using promotional codes from shopping sites like Savings.com has become a necessity for many people. Endless coupons are available - with more than 3,000 different discount codes from more than 400 different online stores, in more than a dozen different categories.  Looking for free shipping?  They’ve got you covered.  Want to save on hotels, electronics, makeup, housewares, or software?  There are promo codes for all of those.  Interested in getting a free iPod, git card or mobile phone along with your purchase? Not a problem.

Retail stores and manufacturers save money hand over fist when they sell to you online because it cuts out the two most expensive parts of any business - land and labor.  No showrooms means cutting much smaller rent checks each month and no salespeople means do they save on salaries, but also on all the expensive regulatory paperwork and government mandated expenses that goes along with each employee.  Much of this savings is reflected in lower online prices, but you can save even more by doing a quick search at a site like Savings.com and using any of the plethora of free online coupons available.
