I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway into the hell of nuclear annihilation... I believe that even amid today's mortar bursts and whining bullets, there is still hope for a brighter tomorrow... I still believe that one day mankind will bow before the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed. »» Martin Luther King, Jr., Address in Acceptance of Nobel Peace Prize - 10 December 1964

World’s Largest Visitor Center? I Think Not!

As my regular readers know Z and I love to road trip. To me part of the joy of road trippin’ is finding all the great local spots that the tourists normally miss. After all, isn’t that what travel is supposed to be all about? One of the resources we use to find interesting unadvertised attractions is local visitor’s centers. So we’ve seen quite a few. However, Myrtle Beach may well be the Visitor’s Center capital of the world with no fewer than a dozen all within one mile of each other on South Ocean right along the beach.

As if that wasn’t enough, Myrtle Beach is also home to what claims to be the World’s Largest Visitor Center. Now, I must admit that we never actually went into this visitor’s center as they were closed when we discovered it and took our pictures, but we both instantly agreed that it’s not only far from the world’s largest, but was really nothing special at all.

It was basically a lot of empty space with the same racks of flyers and posters as every other visitors center in town. It did have an awning over the back door which none of the others did, but overall, we’re simply not very impressed.
