Picked up Z from school today and was immediately presented with a riddle that Ms. Falconer (her favorite teacher and mine) offered up to the class today. Anyone who solves the riddle will receive an in class reward. I believe I can figure it out, but we’re on our way out the door to see The Wizard of Oz at the local drive-in so I’m reaching out for help from y’all-

You’re in a room with three light switches and a closed door. On the other side of the door is another room with three light bulbs. Once you open the door you cannot touch the light switches again. There are no other doors, windows, etc and no way of seeing into the other room or receiving reports of what is happening in it. How can you determine which light switch is connected to which lightbulb?
I’m sure there’s some algebraic solution to this, but it’s been a long time since I’ve done algebra, so any help would be appreciated.
