Personally, I’ve never been very worried about identity theft. I’ve screwed up my credit so bad that a) only a fool would want my identity, and 2) being able to blame my record on an identity thief could actually make my life a bit easier
But I’m pretty close to alone in this situation (as I am in most). For everyone else, I recommend the LifeLock service.
I’m sure you’ve seen their ads, so I’ll keep this relatively brief. They basically do six things to protect your credit information, not only keeping it secure, but making your life that much more worry free as well-
- They put a fraud alert on your account ensuring that any new credit inquiries receive additional screening. This is the number one step recommended by credit experts to keep your info safe.
- They automatically renew the fraud alert every 90 days so that you don’t have to.
- They have your name removed from from pre-approved credit card and junk mail lists and keep making the requests as they expire.
- They order your credit report each year and have it sent directly to you. Federal law requires that all credit agencies provide one free annual report, but most people can’t be bothered to actually order it.
- With their WalletLock™ service if your purse or wallet is ever lost or stolen you can call them and they will walk you through canceling accounts and notifying everyone that needs to be notified to keep you safe.
- Most importantly they offer what is effectively a $1,000,000 insurance policy against the possibility of your credit being compromised. Now that’s a guarantee you can take to the bank.
