They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. »» Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759

On the way back from picking up Z I drove down a street that I had been down a mere 15 minutes earlier. I chose that street because it was flooded and driving through floodwaters in a 4×4 is fun. Well, it was no longer flooded, but there was a giant tree felled across it. We estimate the trunk of the tree to be 3′-4′ in diameter. The trunk was a good 10 feet in from the curb and the”top” of the tree still extended past the center yellow line, blocking all traffic. Considering I had just spent five minutes convincing X that Z would be perfectly safe despite the storm I’m glad the tree hadn’t fallen on my way to the house. I’m really surprised this tree went down. It was about 60 feet tall and seemed healthy. Luckily, no one seemed to be hurt.
