Although I’ve traveled North America extensively, I’ve actually lived most of my life in the greater San Jose area. There are many times, however, I wish I lived somewhere else. Once a month that somewhere else Florida. That’s because the first Friday of each month St. Augustine, Florida (America’s oldest city) hosts the St. Augustine Artwalk which is an experience I’ve yet to have the pleasure of attending.
For those unfamiliar with the First Friday Weekend Art Walk it’s a pretty sweet deal that actually takes place on the first Friday and Saturday of each month. Essentially 20 some odd galleries open their doors and the St. Augustine Sightseeing Trains and Old Town Trolley Tours runs a trolley service with stops at all twenty galleries.
It’s not only a time for the city itself to shine, but helps put the spotlight on St. Augustine’s local artists as well as the galleries themselves. For the art patrons it’s a rather major social event and for the casual art viewer, or especially those who have never been to a gallery, it’s a time to experience art in a more festive atmosphere. In other words, the St. Augustine Artwalk provides culture and entertainment for just about everyone living in, or visiting, America’s first city.
