Search engines come and search engines go, but every now and then, something truly innovating shows up on the internet’s horizon. Spock bills itself as “It’s About People” and I can’t think of a more accurate tagline. Instead of being a web page search engine (like Google or Yahoo!) or even a blog search engine (like Technorati), Spock is a people search engine! Wait, don’t go away thinking this is simply the latest “find your lost love” site, because that’s not even close.

At Spock you can search for people by name (of course), but the real power comes from searching for tags. For example, I searched Spock for Anarchist and came up with the following results-

But you can search for anything and everything! Searching for “blonde German” brought up 1463 people from Claudia Schiffer and Doris Day to the quintessential “girl next door”. And these aren’t your father’s search results! It’s not just a standard listing of links related to the people that match the search. Instead you receive a photo; such prime data as their full name, gender, age, date and place of birth, and their most popular tags; links to their Spock profile, full tag list, more photos, related people, news results, and, of course, the most highly rated web page results for that person as well.Spock isn’t just about celebrities and other notables, though. You are encouraged to enter yourself into the database so that you can be found and connected to other people as well. Sound like social networking? Yeah, I know. But this is not another place to pour your heart out in a rambling blog post. It’s a genuine search engine designed to help people find other people. Of course, you can enter links to your MySpace, blog or website in your profile so they’ll show up in results, but the data isn’t stored at Spock so it doesn’t clog up their search results either.
