Going on more road trips into unfamiliar territory and playing disc golf may seem to be fairly disparate activities to the casual observer. But they’ve both weighed heavily in the recent understanding that my eyes simply aren’t pulling their weight these days. I got my first pair of glasses in like second or third grade. Since then my eyes have gotten progressively worse and at this point even with my glasses my eyes are still pretty darn bad. I last had my eyes checked about two years ago and chose not to actually spend the money on new lenses because the optometrist informed me my prescription was practically unchanged. But if that’s the case then the government must be making road signs smaller and my eyes must have some visual allergy to baskets as I seem unable to see these types of things at even three quarters the distance that Z’s fresh young eyes can.
So, I’ve been reconsidering getting Lasik surgery. When the Lasik boom occurred a few years back I pretty much let everything stand out of the ultimate fear: if something goes wrong with my glasses I can’t see for a few hours or days while I get new glasses, but if something goes wrong with eye surgery I can’t see forever. Well, there have been literally millions of eye surgeries done since then and I don’t recall any mass blindings occurring around the United States, so I’m guessing it’s actually a pretty safe procedure at this point.
Of course, not having medical insurance or a health plan of any sort I’m left to figure out where to get such a procedure done. So I visited a cool new sight called DocShop.com. It’s got sections on all sorts of medical specialists- bariatric surgeons, dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, oncologists, etc, but I visited the eye care specialists section to find a local Lasik center. Selecting California I was taken to a page with a beautiful (and clickable) map of the state and a list of different major cities and regions. Doc Shop’s got seven lasik center’s listed for “San Jose/The Peninsula/Palo Alto” and 10 under “San Francisco Bay Area”, so it looks like I’m going to have a decent selection of choices. As y’all know, choice is always an excellent thing!
This is where Doc Shop shines over a basic Google or yellow pages search. Instead of just giving me a list of links to the various doctor’s website, I was provided with detailed information (and even testimonials) on the various eye centers in my area. In addition to a narrative about each practic, every listing included background information on the doctors, the organizations they belong to, various procedures offered, and even what payment methods they accept.
