This past weekend Z and I played in the fourth Palm Disc Golf Tournament in Milpitas. This tourney is a little bit different than a standard PDGA sanctioned tournament in that it’s a “target” course instead of a “basket” course. Since the course was created in and around an office complex there are no hole baskets available and instead the “holes” include such things as ‘land on the bench/sewer grate/etc’ or ‘hit the light post/tree/fire hydrant/door/etc’. They actually ran two courses – a Par 2 Putting Course and a Par 3 Course. Z and I only played the first so as not to slow down the groups on the longer course (and lessen our chances of doing damage to the property). We both had a blast!
I managed to score 3 “aces” and 7 pars out of 18 holes, placing me firmly in 5th place for the short course and scoring $11 worth of prize money. Z scored par on 3 holes (including one I double bogeyed), but had a really rough time with the “out of bounds” penalties. For most of the front 9 she was thrown off by the short distance on the holes and wasn’t actually throwing the disc, but was trying to lob it like the (stronger) men she was surrounded by. This caused her to come up short quite frequently and land in the OB we were all clearing easily. Still, she managed to bring home $3.50 in prize money herself!
We played in a 5some with Ted Dorff (the tournament director), Doug Korns (who we played the Discraft Ace Race with earlier in the month), and Matt Kelly (who ended up winning the tournament by setting a new course record!). While they ran the second course Z stuck with our original group to act as a spotter/scorekeeper while I served the same duty for another foursome. Everyone was great and a fun time was had by all! I can’t wait to play this “course” again, though that probably won’t be until next year.
