Speaking of non-traditional education….
I always excelled in school, scored exceptionally on my SATs, got accepted to all four of the top American universities I applied to, and won a full scholarship (including living expenses) from the United States Navy. Unfortunately, I was so convinced at the beginning of my senior year of high school that my life would be spent in the military I didn’t apply for any other scholarships. By the time the school year had concluded I’d come to the conclusion that I couldn’t work for a corporation that killed people for a living. So the only thing to do was reject the scholarship, meaning I couldn’t afford any of the schools I’d applied to. The plan was to return to college after a little time working, so I could afford to pay for it myself. Never happened.
Of course, that makes it all sound simple, and it wasn’t, but that’s not the point of this post. The point is that, despite having managed to learn plenty without a formal education, the lack of that “precious” piece of paper has limited my options over the years. So I’ve frequently considered finding a way to acquire a degree without having to deal with all the “schooling” I don’t actually need.
Columbia Southern University is a fully accredited online university that offers traditional Associate, Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programs online. In addition to allowing the transfer of credits from traditional universities, they allow students to receive academic credits for professional or military licenses and training, life experience, self-education and credit by examination. The best part though, aside from the reasonable costs, is that they are designed to work around your schedule - whether that’s a traditional 9-to-5 job, shift work, or full-time parenting.
You’re obviously already comfortable with the internet (or you wouldn’t be reading this blog), so why would you add the stress of scheduling issues into your return to school? Young adults go to college not only to learn, but to “find themselves” and learn to live on their own. As adults, we just want to gain the education and skills we need to redirect our lives. Attending classes online keeps both the student and their pocketbook focused on the real goal - getting a degree in our chosen field.
