The oversimplification of “the enemy” is nothing new, but the latest evidence shows that it’s also not a purely American affliction. Eva Herman, who was once voted Germany’s most popular newsreader, apparently now holds views that are “no longer compatible with her role as a television moderator and talk show host,” according to NDR’s programm director, Volker Herres, her former employer. What was so shocking?
[V]alues like the family, children and motherhood, which were promoted in the Third Reich too, were later scrapped by the 68ers.
“The 68ers” refers to the post World War II radical movements that manifested as hippies here in the States.
Now, I don’t know too much about the Third Reich, but I’m not ready to dismiss the idea that they cherished and supported the family simply because they were also evil enough to slaughter millions of Anarchists, Homosexuals, Gypsies, Jews and dissenters. It’s completely possible that an insane serial killer can still have a genuine love for his mother or children. What collectivism nonsense leads people to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to “evil”?
While trying to find more information on this story I came across several European, and German in particular, blogs that refused to use the word Nazi, instead referring to it as “the N-word”. This was my “chuckle of the morning” as well as fairly instructive as to the real reasons for Ms. Herman’s dismissal. Words do have power, but only the power that we give them. By referring to a word in a sideways manner at this you do not rob it of power, but rather strengthen it.
